The early model F4U-1 "Birdcage" Corsair first saw combat against the Japanese in February 1943, and flown by USMC fighter squadrons.  This version of the aircraft fought in the pivotal air battles above the Solomon Islands during Operation Cartwheel or the reduction of Rabaul into early 1944.  All of the top Marine F4U Corsair aces flew this version of the aircraft including Boyington, Walsh, Hanson, Thomas, Swett, and Aldrich.
